Fine turf playing surfaces come under stress for many different reasons. This is particularly true during the playing season when stress can be due to low cutting, excessive foot traffic and play or excessive rolling. In any case, the turf will suffer if it is not helped and stimulated by using good cultivating practices.

One of the main pieces of equipment for undertaking this job is the DJ Sarel Roller which has the function of pricking the root zone area of the grass up to a depth of 18mm (¾"). The purpose being to aid oxygenation of the root zone and to improve the penetration of chemicals and top dressings.

The use of a Sarel Roller will improve the air exchange between the soil and the atmosphere and enhance soil water take-up, which is most important given the hot dry summers which we are currently experiencing.

The DJ Sarel Roller is particularly suited for this job. It is 600mm (24")wide and contains two cylinders which have 63 tines each with a weight of 55kgs (120lbs) which can easily be pushed over the surface of cricket wickets, bowling greens and tennis lawns, providing the essential channels for water, fertiliser and air to penetrate down to the grass roots.
