"This is an ideal machine for looking after cricket pitches. It is simple to use and most effective".
Steve Martin - Grounds Manager, The Walker Cricket Ground, home of Southgate Cricket Club and Out Ground of Middlesex County Cricket Club
The build up of thatch on most lawns is one of the biggest problems preventing healthy good looking turf.
Thatch is the layer below the growing leaf of the grass plant but above the soil surface. It consists of dead and decaying organic material like dead grass and roots, and is spongy under foot. It is acid and sour, lacking in oxygen. As a result healthy bacteria which normally breaks down organic material die out making the situation even worse. It is in this environment that harmful bacteria and spores breed rapidly spreading moss, fungal infections and other harmful grass diseases. It is also here that weeds can grow and multiply out of control.
To control thatch we need to use a powered machine which will do much the same job as a hand rake without the effort (in fact, early scarifiers were often called Power Rakes). A Scarifier rakes out the dead material without destroying the grass plant and opens up the thatch layer to oxygen and moisture so that helpful bacteria can thrive again and assist in keeping the thatch layer in control.
This is where the DJ Surrey Scarifier comes into it own with 2mm thick scarification blades, which maintain their sharpness throughout their lives. They are set at 24mm centres and cut deep into the thatch and moss converting the dead environment into one of health and life. The depth of the blades can be adjusted from the handlebars and the whole machine is operated by using just one throttle lever. As the throttle is opened it operates a centrifugal clutch which transmits power to the scarification reel. When the throttle is closed the reel stops.
This machine provides the easy solution to all your moss and thatch problems.
